Part III - Existing Facilities

A. Location Map

Location and service area maps for Goodman Point Water Association are provided in
Figures II-I and 11-2.

B. Hist01Y l?lthe Existing Facilities

The Goodman Point area has been both sparsely and heavily occupied throughout its
histOlY beginning with groups of mobile hunter-gatherers. Settlements in the area then
evolved into a sedentary agricultural lifestyle. As the inhabitants relied upon natural
springs at the heads of nearby canyons, the area was extremely susceptible to changing
environmental conditions and was abandoned in the late 1200' s, most likely due to
drought and conflict. The Utes then moved into the area and were the primary
inhabitants until the arrival of the Americans of European descent. The City of COliez
was established in 1886 and grew around fanning and ranching industries.

Most farms and ranches in the area were irrigated through irrigation ditches and canals.
Water used for domestic purposes also came from the same ditches and canals that were
used for irrigation. In the 1950' sand 1960' s, residents in the area became aware of
potential health hazards associated with domestic use of irrigation water. This led to the
development of one large domestic system to serve the mral areas of Montezuma County.
By 1967, a system of wells and pipelines were in service. However, demand quickly
exceeded the capabilities of the wells and treated water was purchased from the Town of
Dolores. This arrangement worked from 1973 until 1983 when demand again exceeded
supply and mral areas were receiving muddy water or would mn out of water all together.
In 1985, the first treatment plant was completed to treat raw water from the Dolores River
through the Dolores Tunnel. The plant was then expanded in 1999 for a total capacity of
4 MGD. Although there is sufficient capacity to support growth in the Goodman Point
area, the area is not served by the municipal water supply.

Residents of Goodman Point area have yet to have a reliable supply of water delivered to
their homes. Water has been hauled by residents for over 100 years. Typically residents
fill 450 gallon tanks from a coin operated spigot and transport it to a larger storage tank at
their home.

C Condition l?lFacilities

Goodman Point residents currently haul water treated by the City of Cortez to their homes
for storage in individual on-site water storage tanks.

Since residents haul water to individual water storage tanks and are not part of a community
water system, conditions of the private tanks are unknown.

Goodman Point Water Association - Preliminaty Engineering RepOli

6
