CONTINUED FROM FRONT

Solutions
Various alternatives were studied during the Phase 1
preliminary screening process in order to select a
short list for intensive study in Phase 2. The alter-
natives ultimately selected for detailed engineering
and economic feasibility studies during Phase 2
were:

. Expanded, coordinated reservoir operations
involving nine area reservoirs

. Construction of new reservoir storage projects
downstream from the Shoshone Hydropower
Plant and on tributaries to the Colorado River

. Revised operations of Colorado-Big Thompson
Project West Slope facilities

. Denver Water System re-operations

. Elimination of constraints on the existing
Coordinated Reservoir Operations Project

. Reanalysis of Grand Valley Water Management
alternatives

. Analysis of Grand Valley Irrigation Company
water management

· Re-operation of East Slope hydropower plants

. Selective removal of Shoshone Hydropower Plant
water rights priority call

. Development of an "insurance pool," (i.e. stored
water), to replace reduced project yields

Benefits to the Client
An experienced team (Brown and Caldwell,
Resource Engineering and Brownstein Hyatt &:
Farber) has been able to determine several poten-
tial sources of water for the 20,000 acre-feet per
year required for recovery of the endangered fish.
We have determined these potential sources of
supply to be workable not only from engineering
and economic perspectives, but also from institu-
tional, political and legal standpoints. Determining
the feasibility of the alternatives has been possible
because of the team's:

. Ability to work with both the East and West
Slope water users

. In-house modeling and GIS capabilities to
analyze the many alternatives

. Experience with re-operation of reservoirs to
obtain additional yield

The Colorado Water Conservation Board and
Colorado water suppliers are presently using
study results to select projects for recovery of the
endangered species of fish.

BROWN AND
CALDWELL

(8 0 0) 7 2 7 - 2 2 2 4 . www.b row n and c a I d w e I I.
