Water Supply Reserve Account - Grant Application Form

Form Revised October 2006

4. Please provide a brief narrative of any related or relevant previous studies. Attach additional
sheets as needed.

The preliminary work completed to date by Smith Wiliams, includes a reservoir sizing study and field reconnaissance
investigation. Based on this initial work it is anticipated that the dam could be constructed of earth and rock fill
material. Most of the material would be obtained from the reservoir basin and other areas to the north and south of
the reservoir site. Drainage material would be hauled form from the commercial gravel pits located near the Gunnison
River. Riprap for erosion protection at the face of the dam would come from the basalt boulders in the basin and
adjacent areas" Initial geologic review of the site indicates that the glacial drift covers much of the area. The glacial
drift consists of basalt boulders and cobbles and also includes sands silts and clay soils. The glacial drift should
provide, pending future geo-technical investigations, adequate bearing capacity for the dam.

The height of the dam will be dependant on the amount of required storage) which will finalized during future studies.
However) the height will be approximately 140 to 180 feet for a 500 and 800 acre-foot reservoir, respectively. The
outlet works would be located near the middle of the dam and supply water to the Orchard City water treatment plant
No spillway would be constructed but additional surge capacity and diversion ditches around the perimeter of the
reservoir would be provided to address the saf~ty of the dam during severe flood events.

5
