- 2-

Douglas County and selected portions of neighboring Arapahoe
County as a component of our ongoing, and never-ending, water
conservation education and outreach efforts.

(

Through this effort, nearty 100,000 homes, with over 300,000
Colorado residents, will be reached and educated regarding the
benefits and particulars of Xeriscape. This DVD program describes
the seven principles of Xeriscape, featuring water wise treatments at
locations throughout Douglas County. The distribution of this DVD
can raise citizen awareness of the existence of altematives to higher
water bills, in the form of the adoption of water wise practices that
include the reduction of traditional landscaping treatments such as
expansive bluegrass lawns. The DVD can help overcome some
institutional obstacles to the adoption of water wise practices by
showing that incremental steps towards water wise treatments are
achievable, and that such initiatives can be embraced and acted
upon by consumers. It is not anticipated that one DVD will change
behavior in the State ovemight, however, this distribution of
educational content can be an important earty step in a multi-year
program to raise awareness, and then impact behaviors to conserve
water resources in the Douglas County/S.Metro area of the State.
Inquiries at retailers and questions posed to water providers
conceming water wise treatments are expected to rise as citizens
seek to leam more about how to adopt the practices depicted in the
video. Retailers and water providers should be prepared to respond
to these questions so as to encourage changes in behavior on the
part of citizens seeking to adopt water resource conservation
practices.

(

Proof of Mission

The DCWRA is focused on supporting the quality of life of present and future
residents of Douglas County and the surrounding area and the economic
destiny of business organizations and political institutions of Douglas
County, which are c1earty dependent, first and foremost, on an assured
supply of potable water.
