I

I

3. Construct a series of recharge ponds filled using
recharge wells:

I

I

This alternative would consist of drilling up to 6 wells
used to pump water into a series of recharge ponds. This
system, as used on the Tamarack Ranch, pumps water during
the winter months when there is generally not a call on the~
river and places water in a pond for re-timing to the river.
The water from the ponds is returned to the river by
underground percolation which due to a time delayed effect
causes the majority of this water to show up in the river
during the summer time. This is the time when the SLCC has
depletions that need to be offset with augmentation water.
The water returned to the river during the winter also has
potential value for endangered species issues facing the
State of Colorado. The development of recharge ponds also
provides habitat for migratory waterfowl. SLCC would alsol
construct a single well used for supplying augmentation J
water directly to the river. This is a drought management
tool currently being used by GASP with approval from the
State Engineer to help provide augmentation water during the
most severe drought situation. The cost of this alternative
is $460,000.

I

I
I

I
I

The Selected Project

I

SLCC plans to construct alternative #3. Features of this
alternative are as follows:

I

I

Up to 6 wells for pumping water into recharge ponds. The
wells would pump up to a combined maximum rate of 35 cfs.
This would produce up to 6500 acre feet annually from the 6
wells. The wells would all be drilled within 100 feet of the
South Platte River.

I
I

Recharge ponds will be placed on locations of the SLCC farm
currently not used for anything. Natural topography will be
used to minimize any dirt work needed for containment.

I
I
I

Piping will be used to convey water from the wells to each
of the recharge ponds. Piping will range from 18 to 21
inches in diameter. The piping will be buried.

The augmentation well would be drilled away from the river
and would utilize "in reverse" some of the piping described
above. The augmentation well would never be in use when the
recharge wells were needed.

I

Feasibility Study
Stromberger Land & Cattle Co.
Recharge Project
October 2002

5Df

~ 2 ~,...\-; 'f e ~...............

I
I

'\r

1'1162., i<

7
