Construct recharge ponds filled using recharge wells:

This alternative would consist of drilling two wells used to
pump water into two recharge ponds. This system, as used on
the Tamarack Ranch, pumps water during the winter months
when there is generally not a call on the river and places
water in ponds for re-timing to the river. The water from
the pond is returned to the river by underground percolation
which due to a time delayed effect causes the majority of
this water to show up in the river during the summer time.
This is the time when Stieb Brothers have depletions that
need to be offset with augmentation water. The water
returned to the river during the winter also has potential
value for endangered species issues facing the State of
Colorado. The development of recharge ponds also provides
habitat for migratory waterfowl. Stieb Brothers would also
convert an existing irrigation well into a well used for
supplying augmentation water directly to the river. This is
a drought management tool currently being used by GASP with
approval from the State Engineer to help provide
augmentation water during the most severe drought
situations. The cost of this alternative is $202,000.

The Selected Project

Stieb Brothers plans to construct alternative #3. Features of
this alternative are as follows:

Drill two wells for pumping water into recharge ponds. The
wells would pump up to a combined maximum rate of 13.4 cfs.
This would produce up to 6000 acre feet annually from the 2
wells. The wells would be drilled within 100 feet of the
South Platte River.

The two recharge ponds will be placed on locations of the
Stieb Brothers farm currently not used for anything. Natural
topography will be used to minimize any dirt work needed for
containment.

Piping will be used to convey water from the wells to the
recharge pond. Piping will be 18 inches in diameter. The
piping will be buried.

Feasibility Study
Stieb Brothers Inc.
Recharge Project
February 2003

7
