/__c.~ .", .

.

high pH and low pH water being delivered to the membranes. The waste
from this CIP is conveyed to a neutralization tank where it is treated, if
necessary, to attain the appropriate pH for discharge to an adjacentperco-
lation pond, and there is no discharge of any sort to the River. . ,

The existing Memcor 6MIO-C micro-filtration unit was installed in April of
2000 to replace a mixed media pressure filtration system which was built in
1993, and used alum as the pre-filteroc.oagulating agent. This required an on-
site storage pond to receive the alum laden -backwash from the filters which
was an on-going nuisance since it had to be periodically hauled off to very
restricted landfill sites authorized to receive such material.

While mixed media filtration with alum can be considered as another type
of treatment, it was dismissed as a viable option for this project given the
higher efficiency and greater degree of treatment afforded by the micro- "
fiJtration system, particularly with regard to anticipated stricter turbidity
standards.

//:';-::<"'-.

.\

As indicated earlier, the firm capacity of the Model6MlO-C is 32 gpm, in
winter conditions, and the addition of an identical unit raise~ the maximum
capacity of the expanded systemto 64 gpm. As discussed under "Alternate
A" in' Section VI of the Planning Document, this is consistent with meetiilg
the design flow of 50 gpm with some allowance to replenish treated water
storage.,

Disinfection will be accomplished using existing hypo':'chlorination equip-
ment, but it is possible t:hat the District may eventually convert to gas chlor-
ination. Control ofpH"will done using existing caustic. soda feed facilities,
as required.

3) Treated Water Storage

Treated water storage will remain the same at 600,000 gallons in the low
zone, 20,000 gallons in the mid-zone, and 600,000 gallons in the high zone.

4) Pumping Stations

.

A new raw water pump station will be constructed on the site of the existing -
water treatment plant with a direct connection to the River. .A drought sce-

32
