ARAPAHOE COUNTY WATER AND WASTEWATER AUTHORITY

1.2 SOURCES OF WATER

ACWW A currently has 17 wells that are used for water supply. Seven of the wells pump from
the Cherry Creel( Alluvium and the remaining ten wells pump from deeper confined aquifers
within the Denver Basin. These aquifers are the Arapahoe, Denver, Dawson, and Laramie Fox
Hills (LFH) Aquifers. Table 1-3 summarizes the capacities and sources of the ACWWA wells.

Table 1-3: Current ACWWA Well Sources and Capacities

Well Name Aquifer Capacity Age of Conditions of Use
(gpm) Improvements
A-I Arapahoe 500 4 Y2 Years None - Used year-round
A-2 Arapahoe 300 4 Years None
Airport 3 Arapahoe 275 2 Years None
Braun Alluvial 1,200 3 Years Summer Season Only
Denmarl( Arapahoe 350 6 Years None
Arapahoe

Denmarl(
Dawson

Dawson

50

N/A

N/A

Denmarl( LFH LFH 200 6 Years Summer Season Only
Ford 2 Alluvial 1,200 1 Year None
LFH5 LFH 120 U sed for Augmentation
Loyd Alluvial Alluvial 1,250 2 Years None
(2)
Loyd Dawson 80 6 Years None
(Antonoff)
Dawson
Loyd (No 1) LFH 80-125 7 Years None
LFH
Loyd Denver Denver 80-120 7 Years None
Race 1 Alluvial 900 5 Years None
Race 4 Alluvial 1,200 1 Year Irrigation Only
Smith 1 Alluvial 1,200 3 Years Irrigation Only

Smith 2

Alluvial

1,150

3 Years

Summer Season Only

Because water quality in some of the aquifers is better than others, usage priority generally is as
follows: the Arapahoe Aquifer, the Cherry Creel( tributary alluvial aquifer, the Dawson and
Denver Aquifers, and finally the Laramie Fox Hills Aquifer. These aquifers are described in
more detail below. Currently the well water is disinfected at the well head with sodium
hypochlorite and then pumped directly into the distribution system. An oxidation sequestering
agent is also administered at some of the wells to control the precipitation of iron in the well
water.

Richard P.
