9

Picture is taken directly under the Heddles Bridge in 1999. The river is much
more entrenched in this picture than in 1912. The river is in one channel at this
time. In 1912, the river was braided into two separate channels. The channel
that was abandoned is now the site of the Edwards residence. In the Edwards
front yard there is now a cottonwood tree that is 136 inches in circumference.
This tree was in the middle of the channel in 1912. It probably got its start in this
flood.

Shortly after the flood, the residence in this area went to great effort to keep
the river in this channel. There is little doubt that the river will continue to stay in
this channel for a long time.

Om9 of the major concerns with this area is the lack of new riparian
vegetation, specifically cottonwood trees. There is simply no riparian along this
section of river. Some of the youngest cottonwood trees in this area must be
forty YE~ars old.
