Fisher
Secretary-Engineer
Po Box 1120
Glenwood Springs, co 81602

Subject: cary Ditch Re-hab

Dear Rolly:

This is in answer to your letter 15 February 1996, with
questions concerning the Cary Ditch project~

1. The alignment of the re-routed Cary Ditch as shown on
the map enclosed with the feasibility study would go
through property owned by Barry & Nancy Castagnasso. We
have met with the Castagnasso on two occasions and they
are agreeable to the proposed alignment provided 800
feet of the ditch is culverted through part of their
property. In short, they have agreed to provide an
easement for the ditch at no charge.

2. After discussing this question with Wes Signs and Kent
Holt, of the Division of Water Resources, I learned that
the head-gate was moved around 1920 from the location
where we now propose it to be because of railroad and
highway requirements. The curve of the river as it
approaches the highway and railroad bridge is heavily
armored and a large berm was constructed to prevent
overflow during the run-off. A new head-gate structure
on this curve would have to be ca~efully engineered and
constructed to prevent a wash out.

3. The water is used only on irrigated pastures and hay
meadows fo~ a total acreage of 679. No other uses are
contemplated.

Rolly, we really need River District help on this worthy
project. ^s you can see from the source of funds exhibt "II",
Upper Yampa is putting up 50% of the cost which is our limit.
The ranchers who are willing to put up $20,000 prefer the
financial program without CWCB participation.

SikC rely,
" I .'
" I
I I' ,

f n R.
