South Suburban is currently utilizing these concepts on several other sites. A brochure
describing hydrozoning is available for all District residents (see attached), and quarterly
reports to the South Suburban Board of Directors and citizens are distributed. Also, a
program catalogue is mailed to all 130,000 residents of the District twice a year, with a
section devoted to new projects.

3. We are interested in where you got the idea for your project. Please indicate what
research you have done or what resources you used in developing your project idea.
(books, individual contacts, etc.)

The concepts of hydro zoning or xeriscaping have been around for years. Organizations
such as Denver Botanical Gardens, the Colorado Federation of Garden Clubs, Denver
Water Department, other governmental agencies and private companies have been
instrumental in the education of South Suburban and the community.

South Suburban staff has worked extensively with a number of these groups to expand
our knowledge of the subject. In 1990, the District began installing state-of-the-art
irrigation controllers. The Motorolla 5000 is one of the most efficient water-monitoring
systems available.

Construction of the native plants and wildflower garden at the Carson Nature Center was
one of South Suburban's first hydrozoning projects. In addition, the District
Administrative Offices located at 6631 South University Boulevard were converted to a
xeriscape landscape including buffalo grass and drought tolerant plantings. District staff
is continually monitoring our successes and utilizing resources to evaluate and modify
our practices.

4. Please identify any community involvement anticipated or planned as part of your
project.

The District has already involved the community with this project. Communication with
the neighborhood homeowners association and other interested individuals has already
begun through South Suburban's informed consent process. This process will continue
with public involvement throughout the planning and construction stages of the project.

5. How might you propose sharing the results of the project with your community?

The results of the project will be published in several documents. The Cherry Park
Homeowners Association Newsletter will inform the residents of the neighborhood and
South Suburban will include the project in its quarterly reports to the Board of Directors
and citizens of the District. Finally, South Suburban's seasonal program schedules,
mailed to all District residents, include information on new projects.

3
