Coal Mine Ave., Littleton, Colorado, 80123, (303) 979-2333
Federal LD. 84-0632112
XERISCAPE AT UTE MEADOWS
Southeast Jefferson County

The Platte Canyon Water and Sanitation District wishes to receive a grant from the Colorado Water
Conservation Board for a Xeriscape project at the Ute Meadows Elementary School in Southeast
Jefferson County. The project will involve the Platte Canyon Water and Sanitation Distict, Southwest
Metropolitan Water and Sanitation District, and Jefferson County Schools, (specifically Ute Meadows
Elementary School), and Jan Caniglia, landscape architect. The project will entail a retrofit of a
portion of the landscape at the front the the Ute Meadows Elementary School with Xeriscape.

The idea for this project was borne of two ideas for water conservation in the District. The first idea
was to identify ten top water users in the District. Any bluegrass areas that were used specifically for
decorative purposes would be replaced with low water use turf and the savings monitored. This
project was an ambitious one, and very expensive. The second project idea was developed as a result
of a directive from Platte Canyon and Southwest Metropolitan Board members who want to target
new homeowners for participation in ongoing Xeriscape Clinic seminars. Jan Caniglia helped District
staff member Sally Mangham develop the current project to use a high water use, high visible area
to demonstrate Xeriscape. The District hopes to get better participation for the Xeriscape Clinics by
demonstrating the beauty ofa low water use landscape. Jan Caniglia is the landscape architect who
works with the District at the Xeriscape Clinics. The Ute Meadows school serves a community of
new homes.

The project will serve as an educational tool for the school during the installation process, with the
long range goal to serve as an ongoing educational tool that can be utilized by the shcool staff The
project will serve as a demonstration garden for the Plate Canyon and Southwest Metropolitan Water
and Sanitation Districts who have ongoing annual Xeriscape Clinic classes offered to District
residents. The Xeriscape site will serve as a live demonstration of landscape beauty and quality that
can be achieved while reducing water use and cost.

The District will monitor the water usage at the schools by consumption reports from Denver Water
Department. The water use at the school will be monitored by District staff throughout the year.
Results will be shared with school staff to use as a teaching tool. Results will be used by the District
to demonstrate to participants in the District's Xeriscape Clinic seminars the savings that can be
realized from a Xeriscape landscape. Success of the project will also be evaluated by monitoring how
participants found out about the District's XeriClinic program and if seeing the demonstration garden
