I'\ITV OF
BRIGHTON

V 22 SOUTH 4TH AVENUE · BRIGHTON, COLORADO B0601 · ISOSI 65B-4050

Education and Prevention

At the beginning of the irrigation season, the City's parks supervisor will conduct a water conservation
training session for all parks employees. The supervisor will explain how to repair and/or adjust sprinkler
heads. He will explain how to report flooding or geyser head conditions and locations where sprinklers are
wastefully spraying sidewalks and streets. The supervisor will reinforce the need for all employees to
conserve water where ever possible. A daily log will be kept describing all observations of wasteful
conditions found and the means used to eliminate each problem. The log will be kept in a convenient
location where all employees can make entries. At the end of the irrigation season the entries will be
tabulated and included in the summary report listed above.

Inventory

An inventory of existing irrigation equipment and the amount of irrigated acres within each of the 30 parks
locations will be developed in a spreadsheet format. This data base will be integrated into the meter reading
spreadsheet listed above.

Upgrade and Maintenance

The City will upgrade the sprinkler system in Veterans Park. This will be done by adding a timer and
control valves to the existing system. An inexpensive weather station will be placed at a secure location
close to Veterans Park. This station will include a high/low temperature gauge, rainfall gauge, and an
atomometer for evapotranspiration readings. City personnel will take daily readings form the weather
station. They will evaluate these readings to determine the amount of irrigation water required to maintain a
healthy turf condition at Veterans Park. The new timer will then be periodically adjusted to increase or
decrease water delivery based on the weather station data. City personnel will also take a representative soil
sample from Veterans Park and have it analyzed by the Colorado State University Cooperative Extension
Office in Adams County. The Extension Office personnel will determine the soil type and advise the City
as to what would be the most efficient method of irrigating the turf at Veterans Park (depth of soil moisture
to achieve optimum root growth).

Monitoring

The City will monitor the change in water usage at Veterans Park based on the water meter readings,
average evapotranspiration numbers, total water consumed by the City during the irrigation season and
observations recorded by parks personnel.

Other Agencies

City personnel talked with the CSU Extension Office in Adams County and the water conservation
consultants at Black and Veatch to determine a suitable project which the City could use to apply for the
water conservation grant and initiate the City's water conservation program.

Citizen Involvement

Before and during the 1997 irrigation season the City will use the local newspaper to invite the citizens to
report any wasteful use of water that they observe in the City's parks. A local phone number will be
published which the citizens can use to record their responses. At the end of the irrigation season these
responses will be tabulated and included in the Summary Report listed above.
