Wirth (801) 524-5403 <br />For Release November 2, 1989 <br /> <br />Rl!n.AMM'Ioo '10 BEmN 1iCRI: 00 GU!:N CAlml'l <br />ENVIR:H!ElfD\L IMPN:T STMm!EN1' <br /> <br />The Bureau of Reclamation has filed a notice of intent to prepare a <br /> <br />draft envirornnental impact statement to examine the operation of Glen Canyon <br /> <br />Dam and its impacts on downstream natural resources within the Grand Canyon <br /> <br />National Park and the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. This, according <br />to Reclamation's lJF.per Colorado Regional Director Roland Robison, is the <br />necessary first step in beginning work on the stataoant. Interior SecretaI:y <br />Manuel Lujan directed the Bureau to prepare the environnental stataoant <br /> <br />earlier this year. The notice of intent was published in the Federal Register <br /> <br />~ 30, 1989. <br /> <br />Robison also announced a proposed schedule for preparation of the EIS <br />that calls for carpletion of a draft Ers by the end of 1991. "Given the <br />inIJortance of this process, as well as the intense and widespread public <br />interest involved, we are coomitted to a timely and ccoprehensive effort." <br />Robison said. <br /> <br />The Enviromental Inpact Stataoant will examine ooth the existing <br />operational criteria of the Glen Canyon Dam as well as alternative <br />envirormental criteria that would be used to develop future operating plans. <br />This infonnation is necessary to deteDnine specific options that could be <br />~lemented, consistent with existing law, to minimize the impact of <br />operations on the downstream natural resow:ces of the Grand Canyon and the <br />Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. The EIS will discuss the requiranents <br />of the Colorado River Calpact, the Colorado River Storage J\ct, the Endangered <br />Species J\ct, National Park Service mandates, recreation issues, wildlife and <br />fisheJ:y needs, and power needs. <br /> <br />As directed by the Secretary of the Interior, the statement will be <br />prepared by the Bureau of Reclamation, with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife <br />Service, the National Park Service, and the Western Area Pcr.ier l\dministration <br />as cooperating agencies. <br />
