Wirth (801) 524-5403
For Release December 13, 1988

SENIOR RECLAMATION OFFICIAL APPOINTED TO COORDINATE
GLEN CANYON ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES

A senior official within the Bureau of Reclamation has been

designated as coordinator of Reclamation's Glen Canyon Environmental

Studies (GeES) program according to an announcement by Assistant

Secretary of the Interior James W. Ziglar. Dr. Wayne N. Marchant,

formerly Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Interior and

recently named Chief of Reclamation's Research and Laboratory Services

Division in Denver, will provide overall coordination of the study

effort. He will assist Upper Colorado Regional Director Clifford I.

Barrett in management of the program.

"Dr. Marchant will bring to the GeES scientific and senior
management experience critical to successful completion of the
studies," said Ziglar. The Assistant Secretary went on to say that
while the majority of work on the six-year old study has been
completed, much of the information gathered to date was obtained
during periods of abnormally high water levels on the Colorado River.
Additional data are needed under more nearly normal conditions to
evaluate operational impacts on endangered and sport fisheries, and on
beach conditions, as well as further economic analysis related to
power generation.

"We are at a point in which there will need to be extensive
coordination with the seven basin states, the power customers, and the
recreation and environmental interests as these studies are concluded.
Dr. Marchant will bring to this process his substantial background in
science and his proven communication and managerial skills," Ziglar
said. The technical staff currently working on the studies will be
retained.
