SUMMARY SHEET
Dominguez Reservoir Project

M
If)
~

LOCATION

'lhe tbminguez Reservoir Project is located in
west-central Colorado in Delta and Mesa Coun-
ties I between the cities of Grand Junction and
Delta,

c~

PURPOSE

The multipurpose project would develop water of
the Gunnison Ri ver, a major tributary of the
Colorado River, for hydroelectric power, munic-
ipal and industrial use, recreation, and fish
and wildlife enhancement. The proposed project
plan has been developed in accordance with the
Principles and Standards for Planning Water and
Related Land Resources which emphasize public
in vol yemen t.

STATUS

The ~minguez Reservoir Project was authorized
by the Water Resource Developments, Feasibility
Studies Act of October 17, 1972 (Public Law 92-
577) ,

Feasibility investigations were initiated in
January 1975 with the formation of the multi-
objective planning (MOP) team. The team has
selected four alternatives to be included in
the feasibility report: (1) recommended plan,
(2) plan with economic emphasis. (3) plan with
environmental empba.<:;is. and (4) no developm~['lt.
The Feasibility Report is scheduled for late
calendar year 1980. The Draft Environmental
Impact Statement is due late calendar year
1980, the public meeting in early calendar
year 1981, and the Final Environmental Impact
Statement in mid calendar year 1981.

The FY79 appropriations include $141,000 and
the President's proposed budget for FY80 in-
cludes $100,000 for continued planning.

PLAN

The recommended plan considers both economic
development and environmental values. Two
dams, two reservoirs, and two powerplants
would be constructed for power generation.
I.lJminguez Reservoir. the larger of the two.
lr."Ould provide t-'ater for municipal 3...'1d indus-
trial use, with some recreational development
of both the reservoir and the river below.
The plan would provide for preservation and
enhancement of fish and wildlife potential
above and below the reservoir and for preser-
vation of cultural resources and scenic values
of the area.

The proposed Dominguez Dam on the Gunnison
River near the community of Whitewater would
be a rolled earth and rockfill structure with
the following approximate dimensions:

Hydraulic height
Crest length
Cre.st width
Volume
Total capacity

171 feet
1,170 feet
30 feet
3,000,000 cubic yards
302,000 acre-feet

August 10, 1979

Dominguez Reservoir would have a surface area
of about 5,000 acres when full.

A conventional powerplant with a maximum
capacity of 18 megawatts would be situated at
the base of the dam, while a pumpback peak-
demand powe:rplant and reservoir (Rim Basin
Reservoir) would be constructed about 800 feet
above Dominguez Reservoi r and about 8 miles
upstream from Dominguez Dam. These facilities
would have an ultimate capacity of 500 mega-
watts and could be built in stages to satisfy
future needs.

Rim Basin Reservoir would be created by build-
ing Rim Basin Darn around a natural draw (chan-
nel) on the east canyon rim above the Gunnison
River. The dam would be a horseshoe-shaped
structure with an embankment of zoned earthfill.
Preliminary studies indicate the dam would hav8
the following approximate dimensions:

Hydraulic height
Crest length
Crest width
Volume
Total capacity

230 feet
8,220 feet
25 feet
14,000,000 cubic yards
9,874 acre- feet

Rim Basin Reservoir would have a surface area
of 137 acres at normal water surface elevation
5,604 feet.

lJ Po....er Plall'
o Pump;nQ PIon'

No

t

l~':HR
iIf~~
,~~
~<.,
~'rl
~~
~C;;l~t~~~~~~)~;
'I V/\
I <k~ 1
,<<:,~,,~\
, 'Q::;='"
,. ?
I
.
~

RIM BASIN RES,
PUMP-BACK STORAGE
,/'
.,,)""-s--:-'
vo..........-:..'~
"'....'5~......
