<br />o <br />c <br />Co.) <br />~ <br /><0 <br />N <br /> <br />SPECIAL INlEREST PRESENTATIONS <br /> <br />Special interest presentations made during FY 1977 are sunmarized below: <br /> <br />Proposal to Study High Plains Project <br /> <br />Dr. Pat O1oate, Director of Office of EconooU.c Research of the Econcmi.c <br />DeveloIX!lffit Administration, Depart::Inant of Ccmrerce, discussed the Proposal <br />to Study the High Plains Project. Dr. Choate explained that irrigation <br />within the 8l29l:i million acres of the High Plains area serves as the <br />fOlU'ldation for a good deal of the agricultural prosperity in that region <br />and that water in the Ogallala formation is being depleted. In <br />consideration of the problem and its econcmi.c impact on the region, <br />narbers of Congress frcm the States of Texas, Oklahoma,' Kansas, Colorado, <br />and New Mexico requested EDA to undertake to detennine Yohat the economic <br />impacts would be and to propose a range of options in dealing with the <br />problan. <br /> <br />Water and Related Lands Program in A-W--R Area <br /> <br />Mr. Frank J. Iuen, III, Director of Ozarks Regional C<Xm1ission, discussed <br />water and related land l?rograms funded by the Carmission. He said the <br />Ozarks Regional Carmiss~on was established ten years ago under the <br />provisions of the Public Works and Economic Developrent Act of 1965. Its <br />charge is to plan, foster, and accelerate the orderly economic develoIX!lffit <br />of the states of Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, louisiana, and Oklahoma. <br /> <br />Non-nuclear Energy Water Requirenents Study <br /> <br />Mr. Frank Do.venport of WRC replaced Peter Rarnatowski to discuss the study. <br />He said that WRC has had broad and continuing interest in needs for use <br />of water for energy developrent. In the 1970's, WRC participated in the <br />Project Independence program and published a report entitled, ''Water <br />for Energy Self Sufficienty. II WRC has continued this program, and <br />the current program is being conducted by \oiRe's Ener~ Developrent and <br />Implications Carmittee (EDIG). To enable participaHon of WRC I s <br />Regional Sponsors in this ac ti vi ty, $50,000 has been provided. <br /> <br />14 <br />
