"lied Protection <br />and J!'loud Prevention Abt <br />(P.L. 566) - Request fbr <br />Assistance under Sec- <br />tion 6. <br /> <br />Dear Mr. Mark: <br /> <br />The Colorado Water Conservation Board is charged with <br />the following purpose as expressed by statute: <br /> <br />"It shall be the duty of the Board to promote the con- <br />servation of the waters of the State of Colorado in <br />order to secure the greatest utilization of such waters <br />and the utmost prevention of floods. . .". <br /> <br />The statute further provides that this Board shall <br />cooperate with the united States and the agencies thereof for <br />the purpose of bringing about the greater utilization of the <br />waters of the State of Colorado. <br /> <br />As you know, in 1956 the Congress authorized construc- <br />tion of the Colorado River storage project and authorized an <br />initial expenditure of $760,000,000 for this project. Pursuant <br />to the authority of this congressional act, construction is now <br />under way on projects in Colorado in excess of $100,000,000. In <br />the planning stage are projects here in colorado with an eventual <br />cost of over $500,000,000. Some of these projects are now ready <br />for construction in addition to those now currently under way. <br /> <br />At the present time, as you know, we have a study of <br />the Colorado River Basin in Colorado under way.
