PROGRESS OF CIVIL WORKS PROGRAM IN STATE OF COLORADO There are no Civil Works projects currently under construction in the portion of Colorado under the jurisdiction of the ;Missouri River Division. An investigation of the South Platte River to determine what modi- fication of authorized Corps of Engineers projects is desirable and compatible with current developments in the basin is presently in pro- gress. The authorized Chatfield Resel'Voir became impracticable of con- struction because of development which took place in the reservoir area after authorization. Consideration is being given to water conservation as well as flood control. Separately authorized surveys of Sand Creek, the Cache la Poudre River at Greeley, and Clear Creek at Golden will be combined with the South Platte River survey. An investigation of the Republican River at Wray, Colorado is cur- rently inactive due to lack of funds. Public Law 685, 84th Congress, authorizes the Secretary of the Army to undertake construction of small flood control projects not specifically authorized by Congress when the Federal cost does not ex- ceed $400,000 and the project is complete in itself. Local interests must provide local cooperation similar to that required for projects specifically authorized by Congress. Construction can be undertaken only after studies adequate to demonstrate the economic feasibility have been made. A reconnaissance study of Niver Creek', undertaken under authority of Public Law 685, is well advanced and involves potential improvement of the creek outlet. However, studies to date indicate that the cost of improvement will be well in excess of the $400,000 limitation imposed on projects under this provision. MILITARY CONSTRUCTION IN PROGRESS All of Colorado is included in the area of Corps military con- struction responsibility for the Army and Air Force in the Missouri River Division.
