<br />OfJJH3 <br /> <br />C-BT BRIEFS <br /> <br />· State Fair Exhibit <br /> <br />Historical Development <br /> <br />of Water <br /> <br />As part of the Colorado waler <br />communlty's efforts 10 tell the <br />story of waler. the NCWCD has <br />developed an exhibit tracing the <br />historical development of water in the <br />state. The NCWCD was one of over <br />40 participating organizallons in the <br />State Fair's Industry/Technology Hall <br />exhibit entitled "Colorado Water - <br />Liquid Gold." In conjunction with the <br />Colorado Water Congress. the <br />Dlstnct was responsible for <br />developing the historical exhibit. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />Early in 1989 waler user <br />organizalions from throughout the <br />state began meeting to discuss how <br />the 13.000 square foot <br />Industry.'Technology Hall should be <br />developed. The Slate Engineer's <br />Office spearheaded the eHan that <br />culminated with the largest <br />cooperative effort ever to tell <br />Colorado's waler story. <br /> <br />Fall Water Users <br /> <br />Meeting <br /> <br />Over'80 persons attended the <br />DistriCt's Fall Water Users <br />Meellng In Longmont on November <br />16. The meetings are held to update <br />water users and citizens on C-BT <br />operations and provide a forum for <br />them to get together to discuss <br />current water Issues. <br /> <br />NCWCD General Manager Larry <br />Simpson encouraged participants to <br />keep communication lines open as <br />water related Issues continue to get <br />more and more media and legislative <br />attention. Simpson said the next year <br />e will be a critical period for northern <br /> <br />The history exhibit follows the <br />evolullon of irrigation in Colorado <br />from prehistoric times to the present <br />day. The 20 panel exhibit includes <br />over 75 black and white photographs. <br />many of which were located in the <br />archives of ditch and reservOir <br />companies. local museums and <br />libraries. and the Stale Historical <br />Society. <br /> <br />Each panel illustrates a different <br />aspect of water development. from <br />the earliest irrigation eHorts by <br />Anazazi Indians to the earliest Anglo <br />explorations of the American West. <br />Additional panels describe the <br />evolution of irrigallon from small <br />diverSions and cooperative canal <br />building efforts to later reservoir <br />construction and transmountain <br />diversion proJects. <br /> <br />A highlight of the exhibit is a series at <br />framed magazine covers from <br />Hamer's Weekly depicting irrigation <br />in Colorado during the 1870s and <br /> <br />Colorado water users as they attempt <br />to meet their own supply needs as <br />well as face increaSing competition <br />from the Denver metropolitan area for <br />those limited supplies <br /> <br />Presentations were vaned throughout <br />the day with excellent talks given by <br />state and federal officials. District <br />staff discussed recent maintenance <br />prOjects and the latest year end <br />storage figures. <br /> <br />U. S. Forest Service representative <br />Geoff Chandler discussed the new <br />Forest Service plan and how It may <br />affect water users. Ed Reutz. from <br />the Denver Water Department. talked <br />about the lalest in the Two FOrkS <br /> <br />1880s. Along with these are two <br />original maps from the F. V. Hayden <br />expeditions. Hayden surveyed and <br />mapped much of Colorado in the <br />1870s. These framed exhibits are <br />part of NCWCD attorney Greg Hobbs <br />private coUection. <br /> <br />., <br /> <br /> <br />History exhibit at the Colorado Stale Fair <br /> <br />The '"History of Water Development" <br />exhibit is now available for public <br />vieWing.
