East Paradox Irrigation System

The eastern half of the Paradox Valley contains some of the

potentially most productive land in the project area. Water service for

these lands under the original plan of the Bureau of Reclamation was to

be provided from water imported to Dry Creek Basin and collected in

Radium Reservoir. The conveyance system involved several miles of

tunnels in addition to large reservoirs. The plan proposed for current

study will involve direct diversion from the San Miguel River

approximately 2 1/2 miles above the mouth of the Cottonwood Creek, a

canal and pipeline from that point to a reservoir at the lower end of

Naturita Creek, and a canal and pipeline to the Paradox Valley following

the approximate route of State Highway 90. Irrigation return flows and

winter flows in Maverick Draw and Naturita Creek would be intercepted,

thus reducing the size of the diversion system required from the San

Miguel River. Total length of canals and pipelines involved will be

about 30 miles.

B. Industrial Water Supply

Space will be provided in Naturita Reservoir to meet potential

industrial requirements in the Nucla-Naturita area, in particular those

of Colorado-Ute for cooling water for the expanded Nucla Thermal Plant.

Direct diversion from the San Miguel River would be used to the extent

they are in priority, with storage held in reserve for critical dry

periods.

C. Expanded Irrigation Facilities in Dry Creek Basin

The south lateral of Lilylands Canal can be extended to serve new
lands in Dry Creek Basin. The extent of new lands served will be
dependent on the amount of added water provided to the Lilylands System
under earlier phases of, development. Included with the Dry Creek
Expansion would be a small re-regulating reservoir in the basin so that
irrigation deliveries could be regulated near the point of use.
