1785

A review of dissolved-metal concentrations in field-equipment quality-assurance blanks indicated that water

. samples that were collected with a D74 non-solenoid, brass sampler were unacceptably contaminated with respect

to dissolved-copper concentrations. The D74 sampler was utilized during periods of elevated stre:llIlflow in the

months of May and June. A comparison of dissolved-metal concentrations in samples collected with the D74 sam-

pIer with grab samples that were collected in glass bottles by the Colorado Division of Wildlife (Barb Horn, written

commun" Colorado Division of Wildlife, 1996) confirmed that dissolved and total-recoverable copper concentra-

rions in samples collected with the D74 were elevated presumably due to sampler contamination. Therefore, all dis-

solved and total-recoverable copper concentration data that were collected with the D74 sampler were not included

in the analyses that are presented in this report. All other trace-element analytes appeared to be relatively insensitive

to contamination or suffered only minor contamination, therefore, they were judged to be acceptable and are

included in the interpretations presented in this report.

Trace-element concentrations were compared to the stream water-<:juality standards that have been

established for the Arkansas River by the Colorado Water Quality Control Commission (Colorado Department of

.... . Health, 1994). The water-<:juality standards were established for individual reaches of the Arkansas River and

reflect the stream classification for the individual reaches. In the upper basin, most reaches are classified for

coldwater fisheries, domestic water supplies, and recreational and agricultural uses. In the lower basin, most

reaches are classified warmwater fisheries, domestic water supplies, and recreational and agricultural uses.

.". ._~~': ;.'~,:. ;_'.~_',:.: ~,~'_':~,~;,; _.~:.;,~.:.~~."
