For example, USDA Is now lt1e protector of more wetland than any other
federal agency.

USDA Is the lead agency in the Pre:;ident's agricultural Water Quality Initiative
whieh includes research and education programs, as well as the lead In research into'
more environmentaJly-sensfllve agricultural systems. The Department at Agriculture Is
the premier agency in supporting research into new water conservatlon technologies.

Several agencies are involved in Improving water conservation, including the
Agricultural Research SaNiea, Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation' Service,
Cooperative Extension SeNics, CooperattvG State Research Service, Farmers Home
Administration, and Soil ConseMltlon Service.

As water conservation issues continue to grow and become more complex. the
. scope and dImensions of the issues and alternative policies and programs must be
articulated. As lhese emerging issues are addressed in the publio forum, an adequate
information base to acnJrately define the problems and opportunltles is necessary.
More informetlon is needed. Isolated examples and anecdotal Information is not
enough.

I,

: I

.j
