<::>
OJ
I-'"
1-'

The Council is pleased that Reclamation supports the

state of Wyoming's plans for industrial use of the waters of

the Big Sandy River and has made cost-sharing and financial

arrangements with the state to expedite early construction of

this promising program.

Of particular interest to the Council is the program for

saline water use and disposal opportunities. The Council

concurs in the concept that where ever practicable bene-

ficial use should be made of brackish and saline water by

industrial or other users. The proposed legislation provides
for measures to demonstrate or verify saline water use tech-

nology and to beneficially use and subsequently dispose of

saline waters.

Reclamation is working with the Forum, BPA, public and

private utilities, and others to identify a proper site and

cost-sharing possibilities for installation of a 8aline water

cooling tower at a powerplant located in the Colorado River

Basin. Installation of a saline cooling tower at an existing

powerplant appears to be the most cost-effective way to

verify the potential of this particular beneficial use of

sal i ne water and address indus tr i es' concerns regard ing

equipment reliability. Cost-sharing agreements, equipment

design, and an operational plan for installation and opera-

tion of the verification unit are expected to be completed in

FY-l984, with installation of the verification facilities

scheduled for initiation in FY-1985.

-11-

, OJ, _~
