Title: Effects of Metal-Mine Drainage on Water Quality in Selected Areas of
Colorado, 1972-1973. Colorado Water Resources Circular No. 25. Colorado
Water Conservation Board, Denver, CO.

Prepared by: R.E. Moran and D.A. Wentz

Date: 1974

Time of Study: March 5,6, 1973 and June 25,26,27, 1973
Some sites only measured on one day of the year.

Sites:
SR-1 A Slate River above confluence with East River
SR-1 B Slate River above Baxter Gulch
SR-1 C Slate River below Coal Creek
SR-2 Coal Creek above confluence with Slate River
SR-3 Coal Creek above Wildcat Creek
SR-S4 Keystone Mine
SR-5 Coal Creek below Eik Creek
SR-5A Coal Creek at Irwin
SR-6 Slate River above Coal Creek
SR-7 Oh-Be-Joyful Creek above Slate River
SR-8 Slate River above Oh-Be-Joyful Creek
See Figure 18 on p. 47 for location of sites.

Parameters: Ph., Temperature, Conductivity, Bicarbonate, Carbonate,
Alkalinity, Carbon Dioxide, Hardness, Dissolved Calcium, Dissolved
Magnesium, Cadmium, Copper, Iron, Lead, Manganese, Nickel, Zinc

Metals measured in total and dissolved forms.

Purpose of Study: The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to
which mining activities have affected the water quality in this particular
area and 17 other areas in Colorado. More specifically the authors' intent
was to determine what metals entered the streams, how far they traveled
downstream, how they varied seasonally, and what mechanisms were
responsible for their transport and removal from the aqueous phase.

Other aspects of the study: All data for the Slate River Drainage are
presented on pp. 140-150. Sampling in this area occurred in March and
June of 1973 and does not reflect low flow conditions.
