Obtain WQdata/studies lincl. biological monitoring)

The Upper Gunnison River Water Conservancy District contracted with Lynn
Cudlip of Bio-Environs to prepare a Summary of Water Quality Studies for
the East ,and Slate River Drainages. The report resulting from this effort
was completed on May 23, 1993.

The report provides summaries of water quality studies of the East and
Slate Riv~r drainages in Gunnison County, Colorado. Wiltzius in 1964
conductEld some of the earliest work on the East River above the
confluen~e with the Taylor River. Prior to this work, the United States
Geological Survey apparently collected data in the area as early as 1959,
most likely in connection with tlow gaging stations. The most recent work
includes pontinuing efforts by the Colorado Department of Health to collect
and store the Environmental Protection Agency STORET data. Stations on
East River (#000078) and Slate River (#000150 and #000151) are ongoing
collection sites. Additionally, the Mount Emmons Project, the Roaring Judy
Fish Hatchery and Rivers of Colorado River Water Watch Network have
ongoing water quality collection programs.

Studies considered as baseline are the Rumberg et. al. 1978 study, the Mt.
EmmonsSTORET Data, the Camp, Dresser & McKee, 1980 "Mt Emmons
Water Quality Baseline Study", the NSU Corporation, 1981 report, the
East/Slate River 1986/1987 Report, and the STORET data. Basic
parameters such as pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, and temperature,
nutrients' and metals have been recorded in these reports or data banks.

Nutrient pata have also been measured, but in many cases the samples
were analyzed at limits of detection. The Rumberg et. aI., 1978, the NSU
Corporation! 1981 report and the East/Slate River 1986/1987 studies
provide nutrient data without this concern.

Included in the Cudlip report are summaries of the various studies
completed for the East and Slate River drainages, Also included in the
report are parameters of water quality listed by stream. In this list, reports
have been identified which correspond to the parameter and stream.
STORET'data are included in the parameter listings, however, the reviewer
must note that all parameters have not been sampled consistently through
time.

A list of all sites by stream or stream section has been provided in the

7

, ~
,OJ
j

:i

'..,'.",11
." ,', , "j",
~">'d'''';='';''_-'';'''~' ""'"

.. ~~' "'~~
