<br />WATER ~'OR Clll.ORAPO <br /> <br />The 1980 census found Durango's population to be about 11,400 peop1!!, an <br />increase of about 1,100 people in the last 10 y..ars. In the future, per capita <br />voter consumption viII drop a Imall amount because of the in8t81Ii~ of vater <br />meters, but total vater demand viII continue to rise because of an increasing <br />population. Beginning in 1980, the capabilities of the city's existing vater <br />system vcre exceeded during the summer months. vhen de~and is highest. The <br />projected vater supply deficit would be 10 percent of total demand In the year <br />2000 and 17 percent of total demand in 2020. Shortages during peak summer <br />demand vould be up to 42 percent of peak demand in the year 2000 and up to 55 <br />percent in 2020. <br /> <br />- <br />The Durango City Council unanimously approved a letter of intent to <br />in the project by contracting from the Animas-La Plata Water <br />District f~r 2.500 acre-feet of vater annually. <br /> <br />participate <br />Con,ervancy <br /> <br />The project vould provide 2,000 acre-feet of municipal and industrial water <br />annually to the South Durango Water District and 2,000 acre-feet to the La <br />Plata area rural users. The Animas-La Plata Water Conservancy District would <br />receive an additional 2,700 acre-feet of vater 'for municipal and industrial <br />purposes. Each year, the Southern Ute Indian Tri~~ vould receive 26,500 <br />acre-feet of industrial ~~ter and the Ute Mountain Ute Indian Tribe 6,000 <br />acre-feet of industrial vater, to de~elop resources on their r~servations. <br /> <br />lrrigable land in Colorado on Red MCS3 alone the La Plata River and on the Dry <br />Side vest of the river vould receive project ~ater each year to ensure a full <br />crop yield. An average ann~al votcr supply of 65,800 acre-feet would be <br />provided to 31,500 acres of full service and 14,000 acres of supplemental <br />service non-Indian land; 3,100 acre-feet of water to irrigate 1,800 acres of <br />full service land belonging to the Southern Ute Tribe; and 24,400 acre-feet of <br />voter to irrigate 11,600 acres belonging to the Ute Mountain Ute Indian Tribe. <br /> <br />WATER FOR NEW MEXICO <br /> <br />The project viII supply municipal and industrial water on a firm or guaranteed <br />basis to meet the projected requirements for Farmington, Bloomfield. Aztec, and <br />Shiprock and their surrounding areas, at least through the year 2010. <br />Parmington and its outlying area would receive 19,700 acre-feet each year from <br />the project. The City of Aztec and its surrounding area would receive up to <br />5.800 acre-feet each year and the City of Bloomfield and its outlying area <br />would receive up to 5,300 acre-feet each year. The Navajo Tribe is allocated <br />7,600 acre-feet for service in the Shiproclt area. <br /> <br />Irrigable land in New 'Mexico along the La Plata River would receive project <br />vater each year to guarantee a full crop yield. The 8,180 acres of non-Indian <br />irrigable land would receive 13,300 acre-feet of supplemental and full service <br />water, and the Ute Mountain Ute Indian Tribe ~ould receive 800 acre-feet of <br />vater to irrigate 380 acres of full service land on that portion of its <br />
