Weare fortunate in having had Falcon Dam ready for use which protected
the Lower Rio Grande Valley below it from damages estimated at as
much as $15,000,000.

********

REPOR T ON ACTIVITIES OF THE CORPS OF ENGINEERS

Col. Arthur H. Frye, Jr.
District Engineer, Los Angeles, California

The civil works boundaries of all Corps of Engineers Districts
are established to include river basins or portions of river basins,
regardless of state lines or other political subdivisions. The
Los Angeles civil works district, for example, includes the entire
Colorado River Basin plus Southern California lying generally south
of the Tehachapi Mountains. Our principal as signment in the Colorado
River Basin is flood-control work.

Last year at the tenth annual conference of this Association there
was presented a resume of projects authorized by Congress in the
Colorado River Basin and at this time a report will be made on the
progress made in the interim period. Progress Report:

1. We have received additional planning money for Painted Rock
Reservoir and for Mathews Canyon Reservoir.

a. These funds have permitted us to continue foundation
explorations, start on the detailed studies of embankment
and spillway locations with the result that the general
design memorandum for Painted Rock Reservoir is
scheduled for completion in January, 1955. Similarly the
general design memorandum for Mathews Canyon Reservoir
should be completed in March, 1955.

2. Contract plans and specifications for the Trilby Wash detention
basin have been prepared.

3. Other studies and evaluations have been started and some completed
on flood-control benefits and improvements.

a. Pot-Hook-Savery project on Little Snake River in Wyoming
and Colorado.

b. Curecanti on the Gunnison in Colorado.

c.. Navajo project on San Juan River in New Mexico.

- 28 -
