This period
of continuous pumping was arranged in cooperation with the
Pacific Southwest Power Interchange Committee, at a time when
generating capacity at Boulder power plant could be made available
for District nse with least inconvenience to war industries and with
minimum consumption of fuel oil for power production. The plants
were operated also for short periods during the remainder of the
year to maintain reservoir storage along the main aqueduct and to
furnish water for District camps and for desert training centers
of the U. S. Army.
The following tabulation shows the hours of operation, the acre
feet of water pumped, and the energy used for ]lumping and camp
and station service in the fiscal year 1943-44.

PL.'\!\'T
Intake
Gene
Iron Mounlain
Eagle Mnunt<lin
Hayfield

PUMP HO(]Il~
OF UPf.Il.ATIOI\

I\WHR FlJIl
PIJ;llPI!\'G

W.HER PU1I1Pl::lJ
,'1CRt Ft::ET

Tnlal

.....1.551,.14
1.272.27
802.80
763.27
7JU.lO
5.!l99.R4

9..s6-t,700
8,.5ml.20()
2,:J52,OOO
6,793.000
6,-1I5.00U

28..313.7
24,.379.6
1+.057.2
13,189.4
12.035.7

33,632,lJO!)

Energy lIsed for pumping.
Energy usetl ror camp and stalion service...

KWH"
.........33,632.900
.. 2..355,540

The performance of all pumping equipment was highly satis-
factory throughout the year, the minor difficulties experienced
being of a routine nature. Some adjustments were required to
improve the operation of one of the pump discharge valves at
Gene pumping plant. The alterations made in this mechanism . i
corrected operating troubles previously experienced and arrange-
ments were made with the manufacturers for corresponding
changes in all similar valves. .
The average force to man the five pumping plants and maintain
camps and equipment, under the light water demand of the past
year, numbered about 68, and consisted of the supervisory and
clerical staff at Gene headquarters, station chiefs, system and tele-
phone operators, mechanical crew, electricians, machinists, utility
men, cooks, flunkies, and guards. The pumping plant and trans-
mission and telephone system crews are under the direction of the
District's chief electrical engineer.
