The service ,"cUI <br /> <br />for the projects Milk Creek segment is in Moffat County in the Yampa <br /> <br />River Basin, while the service area for the White River scemcnt is i~ <br /> <br />Rio Blanco County in the lYhite River Basin. Meeker, the SCcit of <br /> <br />Rio Blanco County, is the largest community in the area. N"<1l:"by trade <br /> <br />centers outside of the area include Craig, about 49 miles north of <br />. <br /> <br />Meeker, and Rifle, about 41 miles south of Meeker. The project area <br /> <br />is traversed in a north south direction by State Highway 13 (789). ,".hich <br /> <br />connects with major east-west highways at Rifle and Craig. State <br /> <br />Highway 64 extends west from meeker. <br /> <br />RiU,,;.is on the main I inc of <br />.;. --. ~ <br /> <br />the Denver and Rio Grande lYestern Railroad, and Craig is the terminal <br /> <br />for a branch line of the same railroad. Airline service is a~lable <br /> <br />at Craig and Grand, Junction, Colorado. <br /> <br />Only about 3,000 people live in the sparsely settled project area, <br /> <br />including 1,597 in Meeker. The population. of Meeker has decreased by <br /> <br />3.5 percent between the 1960 and 1970 Census. The nearby towns of Craig <br /> <br />and Rifle had 1970 populations of 4,205 and 2,150 respectively. Both <br /> <br />of these trade centers have had population growths during the last <br /> <br />10 years. <br /> <br />Streams flowing through the project area include the ~lite River <br /> <br />and its tributaries, and Milk Creek, and Williams Fork, both tributa"ies <br /> <br />of the Yampa River. The quality of the water is ideall;, suited for <br /> <br />anticipated uses. <br />
