Downstream flow from
McPhee to be year-round

Except during the spring
nmoff months, most of the
year finds the Dolores River
nearly dry below the Man-
tezums Valley Irrigation
System dralnoff for many
miles untlllt Is supplemented
by small streams and then
the San Miguel River.
McPbee Dam will allow
water to flow year-round,
averaging 105,400 acre-feet
annual1y (the river's long-
time.average Is 245,000 acre-
feet).
Included will be 3,900 acre-
feet for downstream water
rights, 25,400 acre-feet of
project water released
specifically to Improve the
river's fishing, and 76,100
acre-feet of surplus snow-
melt nmoff thst could be
spilled or released In an-
ticipation of spills. The 1,600
acre-feet of water reserved
for future fish and wildlife
uses will be stored In McPhee
Reservoir untll nature and
location of use are deter-
mined.
To Insure flows of fish, the
minimum flows below the

dam will be maintained at 78
second-feet during wet years,
50 during normal yeaTS and 20
during dry years.
Of the 76,100 acre-feet of
snowmelt surplus nmoff,
about 66,000 will be released
on a scheduled basis In an-
ticipation of spills from mid-
April to the end .of June to
provide white-water boating
opportunities In the river
below the dam.

Water will be drawn from
McPhee Reservoir at Great
CUt for Dove Creek and the
drylands as well as from
outlets on the dam from a tun-
nel on the south side of the
lake for the Montezuma
Valley Irrigation Co. system,
Cortez and Towaoc.

These waters will even-
tuslly flow Into the San Juan
River.
However, McPhee wll1
have large bodies of inactive
water so that water sports
and fishing will be available
at all times. ThIs Is the same
case with Montezuma Creek
north of Dove Creek.

Dawson Draw Reservoir,
located between Lewis and
ArrIola, Is being created for
sports and recreation,
wildlife and fishing and will
be nearly full at all times.
Supplementing the supplies
will be the Groundhog (21,000
acre-feet), N arragulnnep
(19,000) and Totten (about
3,000), already built and
operated by the irrigation
company. These, too, are
generally well supplied for
year-round fish and other
recreation.
