.

.

CHAPTER I

.

INTRODUCTION

.

The City of Fort Collins, Colorado, located at the base
of the Rocky Mountain foothills, is a community surrounded
by natural beauty. The rapid growth and development of the
city and Colorado State University in the early 1960's,
stimulated concern for preservation of open spaces and
natural resources.
In March 1974, the Planning Division of the Department
of Community Development set forth an ambitious plan for open
space. Included was a green belt or trail system following
two natural drainages, Spring Creek and the Cache La Poudre
River. These were also linked by another trail along the
foothills, thus forming a triangular belt of open space
around the city. Associated with this green belt would
be foot, bicycle, and horse trails as well as parkland.
The purpose of this project is to research the natural
and cultural resources found along the Cache La Poudre
River Trail and to develop a plan for the interpretation
of significant resources.
Rivers and waterways have always been of utmost
importance in the development of American communities.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

1
