<br />o <br />C:l <br />(-' <br />en <br /> <br />(.0 <br /> <br />Pumped-Storage Hydropower Potential: For pumped-storage hydroelectric power <br /> <br /> <br />generation, two reservoir sites are needed, located a short distance apart but separated in elevation. <br /> <br />Water is released from the upper reservoir to generate electricity during the work day and early <br /> <br /> <br />evening when electrical power demand is at Its peak. When electrical demand is low, at night and <br /> <br /> <br />on weekends, water Is pumped back to the upper reservoir from the lower reservoir to replenish the <br /> <br />water supply. Pumped-storage hydropower is financially attractive in many instances because the <br /> <br /> <br />peak-demand energy Is much more valuable than the off-peak energy. The shorter the distance <br /> <br />between reservoirs in relation to the elevation difference, the greater the potential financial return. <br /> <br />1:-; <br /> <br />Exceptional topography at Wolford Mountain Site A' may provide pumped-storage <br /> <br />hydroelectric potential. A possible upper reservoir site has been Identified on Wolford Mountain, 1.4 <br /> <br />miles east of Site A' reservoir and 1300 feet higher in elevation. The distance to elevation-difference <br /> <br />ratio of 5.5: 1 at this site falls within the topographic criteria of pumped-storage hydropower sites <br /> <br />which have been found financially attractive. Further Investigation is warranted. <br /> <br /> <br />WOLFORD MOUNTAIN SITE C DAM AND RESERVOIR: Wolford Mountain Site C is located <br /> <br /> <br />on Muddy Creek, 5 miles north of Kremmling. The full reservoir water surface elevation ,of 7485 feet <br /> <br />at Site C would be 10 feet higher than the water surface proposed for an alternative reservoir at Site <br /> <br />A', 3.8 miles downstream. <br /> <br />The dam site Is a 250-foot wide canyon of sandstone and claystone shale. Based on the <br /> <br />foundation conditions and the materials potentially available at the site for dam construction, a zoned <br /> <br /> <br />embankment dam with an interior sloping core zone has been selected. A concrete-lined service <br /> <br />spillway would be located on the left abutment and an auxiliary spillway on the right abutment. The <br /> <br /> <br />potential pumped-storage site discussed for Site A' could also function with Site C. <br /> <br />RED MOUNTAIN DAM AND RESERVOIR: The Red Mountain Dam Site is located on the <br /> <br /> <br />Colorado River, 1 mile east of Kremmling. The dam would be located at a narrows, approximately <br /> <br />600 feet wide, formed by the base of Red Mountain on the north side of river and a terrace extending <br /> <br /> <br />from Junction Butte on the south.
