Arkansas River from Ke stone to Webbers Falls Lock and
Dam, Oklahoma. See Map 1 A survey scope study to determine the
{;;sibility of channel stabilization and bank protection or other
remedial work on the Arkansas River. An initial public hearing
was held on February 5, 1969. Several plans of improvement have
been evaluated on a preliminary basis, and discussed with local
interests during public participation meetings. The study is
scheduled for completion in Fiscal Year 1976.

I

I

I

2. Verdigris River and Tributaries, Oklahoma. (See Map 1)
A survey scope study to investigate the problems and needs of the
basin and determine economic and engineering feasibility of water
resource development including the extension of navigation from
the Arkansas River waterway into southeastern Kansas. The study
will include investigation for flood control on Bird and Mingo
Creeks. An initial public hearing was held on October 4, 1967.
Preliminary studies show that navigation into Kansas via the
Verdigris River would not be economically justified at this time.
An environmental inventory of the basin and a study of the ground-
water resources of the basin are complete. Flood problems in the
Bird Creek and Mingo Creek Basin are being studied. The overall
study is scheduled for completion in FY 81.

I

I

I

I

3. Grand (Neosho) River and Tributaries, Oklahoma and Kansas.
(See Map 1) A survey-scope study to investigate the problems and
needs of the basin and determine the economic feasibility of water
resource development including the extension of navigation from
the Arkansas River waterway into southeastern Kansas. The feasibil-
ity of channel stabilization and bank protection on the Neosho River
will be investigated. An initial public hearing was held on Novem-
ber 1, 1967. Preliminary studies show that navigation into Kansas
via the Grand (Neosho) River would not be economically justified
at this time. An environmental inventory of the basin has been
made and a study of the basin groundwater resource is essentially
complete. A land-use study, a recreation needs study, and a recon-
naissance report on bank caving problems downstream of John Red-
mond Dam and Reservoir have been made. This study was suspended
in 1972 and is scheduled for resumption in FY 81.

I

I

I

I

I

4. Oklahoma National Recreation Area, Oklahoma. (See Map 1)
A survey-scope study of the feasibility of establishing the four
lakes area of Fort Gibson, Tenkiller Ferry, Robert S. Kerr, and
Webbers Falls as the Oklahoma unit of the National Recreation area
system. The report was completed and reviewed by BERH. BERH re-
ported to OCE on December 4, 1973, that the establishment of the
National Recreational area is not advisable at this time.

I

I

I

I

135

I
