Data is being col-
lected on the Hunnewell dam site on the Kansas-Oklahoma border.
The feasibility report has been rescheduled for completion in
Fiscal Year 1977.

I

I

2. Western Energy Expansion Study - Colorado, Kansas, New
Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. (See Map 1) This study will inventory
and compare opportunities to ,increase the availability of energy
capacity and generation through water management and development.
It will consider such things as using federal project waters to
cool thermal power plants, the revision of present operations to
lower pumping requirements and raise power output, the application
of energy conservation measures, the enlargement of present facil-
ities, the exploration for new installations, and the overall pos-
sible reorganization and modernization of facilities to increase
power output and reduce waste and duplication. This investigation
is scheduled to begin in Fiscal Year 1976.

I

I

.,

I

Corps of Engineera:

I

Arkansas River - Great Bend, Kansas, to Tulsa, Oklahoma (See
Map 1) - a survey scope study to develop an integrated plan for
flood control and related improvements in the mid-Arkansas River
Basin. It will include determination of the economic feasibility
of extension of navigation from the Arkansas River waterway into
Kansas. Public hearings were held in Wichita, Kansas, on May 11,
1965, and December 15, 1966, to initiate survey report studies.
An inventory of the water resource problems and needs potential
projects for solving these problems and needs is complete. Plan-
ning information sessions and public workshops have been held in
various locations in the basin to provide the public study infor-
mation and to obtain their views on potential projects. A basic
environmental inventory of the basin is complete. Preliminary
investigations have been made to determine the economic feasibility
of extending navigation into Kansas from McClellan-Kerr Arkansas
River Navigation system via the Arkansas River. The navigation
studies were suspended in FY 75 because a preliminary analysis
indicated that the navigation extension would not be economically
feasible. An interim report on the flood control problem at
Halstead, Kansas, is being prepared for submission in FY 76.
Submission of the survey report is scheduled for FY 76. Studies
are being made on the Little River, Cow Creek, Alva Lake, Engle-
wood Lake and three multi-purpose lakes in Kansas.

I

I

I

I

I

I

I

Soil Conservation Service:

Arkansas Drainage in Oklahoma (See Map 2) A special study
which will survey land use, crop yields, an inventory of potential,
proposed, authorized, under construction, and completed multiple
purpose sites, and a municipal water inventory. Study is to be
completed in Fiscal Year 76.

I,

I

I

131

I
