Fryingpan-Arkansas Project, authorized for construction <br />by the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation by P. L. 87-590, August, 1962. <br />The .project is scheduled for completion in 1985. It involves the <br />diversion of the Colorado River basin water to the Arkansas River <br />basin for irrigation, industrial and domestic USe. <br /> <br />2. Trinidad Dam and Reservoir on the Purgatoire River four <br />miles above Trinidad, Colorado. Authorized by the Flood Control <br />Act, 1958. Scheduled for completion by the U. S. Corps of Engi- <br />neers in 1977. The completed project will provide flood protec- <br />tion for Trinidad and storage of irrigation water for 20,000 acres <br />of land. A permanent pool for recreation will be provided. <br /> <br />3. Arkansas River and Tributaries above John Martin Dam, <br />Colorado, submitted by the Secretary of Army to Congress, Septem- <br />ber 13, 1972. Recommends authorization and construction of local <br />flood protection projects at Florence, Portland, Pueblo (Dry and <br />Fountain Creek), and La Junta (Arkansas River and King Arroyo); <br />channel and river improvements on the mains tern of the Arkansas <br />River from Brewster to Florence, and from Pueblo to Las Animas <br />for flood control; Fountain Creek Reservoir, protection of Pueblo <br />from floods on Fountain Creek. <br /> <br />4. Interim Study Report on Arkansas River and Tributaries, <br />Lamar Local Protection, Kendall Lake, Kansas, 1974, U. S. Corps <br />of Engineers. In Colorado, the report recommended authorization <br />and ~onstruction of the Arkansas River portion of the Lamar Local <br />Protec tion Projec t. <br /> <br />5. The U. S. Department of Agriculture, Soil Conservation <br />Service, has approved three Resources Conservation and Develop- <br />ment planning areas which encompass the Arkansas River Basin in <br />Colorado. These programs include, but are not limited to, flood <br />prevention and flood control, water and land management, soil <br />erosion and sedimentation, stream bank erosion, environmental <br />and economic concerns, etc. The R.C.&D. planning areas are: <br /> <br />a. Sangre de Cristo Area - Includes Las Animas, Huerfano, <br />Pueblo, Custer, Fremont, Chaffee and Lake Counties, nine projects <br />completed from 1970-1975, and have underway seven projects. <br /> <br />b. East Central Colorado Area - Includes Cheyenne, Elbert, <br />El Paso, Kit Carson and Lincoln Counties. An R.C. & D. project <br />plan was approved in October 1976, and Federal assistance for <br />funding has been requested. <br /> <br />c. Lower Arkansas Area - Includes Baca, Bent, Crowley, <br />Kiowa, Otero and Prowers Counties. An R.C. & D. Project plan <br />has been completed for the area which is scheduled for approval <br />in 1979. <br /> <br />116 <br />
