002310

should be limited, however, so that not
more than about half the weed growth
will be taken. Limited use during the
winter may be permitted, but grazing
sho,uld at no time be suffieient to destroy
the eover of annual weeds and such
gTasses as are present. The annual-
weeds type is largely on classes III,
IV, and VI and is either abandoned
cultivated land or grassland that is so
depleted that it is not possible to deter-
mine the type. It is the most severely
depleted range type, but at the same
time it is the most productive of the
depleted types. Grass could be rees-
tablished on most of it.

H7-588
Figure 9.-Shorl-gras8 J'allge in good condilion. Much of the depleted range of the county
once had similar cover.

The half-shrub and annual-weeds
types arc subject to similar manage-
ment for proper use. The half-shrub
type is for the most part degenerated
grassland. It is most likely to oeeur
on shallow and gravelly soils of class
VI. These areas should, be given
periodie rests during the growing sea-
son. The amount of grazing should be
restricted to such a degree that the
grass which is present may have an
opportunity to regain vigor and vitality
and to increase in, arnount. The an-
mml-weeds type is almost entirely
depleted grassland, but as a rule
occurs on better sites than the half-
shrub, usually on class III, IV, and VI
lands. Grazing should be restricted to
permit grasses to increase. The chief
forage produced at present is Russian
thistles, which have a rather low forage
value. These weeds are relatively pal-
atable early in the season and generally
can be grazed from about May 20 to
July 10 wi thout damage to the grass
that is present. This may also help
to eliminate competition for the few
grass plants that arc present. Grazing

REGRASSING CUL'l'IVATED LAND AND
DENUDED GRASSLAND

Large areas of eroded land, now in
cultivation ,or formerly cultivated must
be returned to grass in order to insure
permanent stabilization and economic
returns. There is also much land in
the eOl'nty that has never been culti-
vated, but because of wind erosion,
originating from nearby cultivated land,

Western and Southeastern Baca County SoU Conservation Districts, Colorado

21
