C.J
00
If)
rl
(,..,

~....

.

.

inspeetion of the dam to examine present conditions of the structure and abut-

ments and to determine the extent of additional field data needed for the hydro-

logical and engineering analyses. Prescribed geologic and topographic field

data are being obtained and work will begin on the detailed plans and cost esti-

mates this fiscal year. Pending appropriation of requested funds, completion of

a feasibility report and associated environmental assessment are scheduled for

fiscal year 1983.

Taos Unit--In August 1980, the New Mexico Representative attended a meeting in

Taos of the Taos County Merchants Association to provide information on the

background and the current status of the Indian Camp system of Taos Unit. The

merchants indicated a desire to revitalize this development. The association

was advised of steps that they or any other group should go through in such an

attempt, including making their efforts known to the New Mexico Interstate

Stream Commission.

M&I Water Contracts--In January 1981, the Regional Director received a written

request from the Mayor of Taos for a new draft of water sevice eontract for 400

acre-feet of San Juan-Chama Project water which had been allocated in the fall

of 1975 for use by the town. The Service's procedures now require that, before

such a draft can be submitted for action by a community, the basis of nego-

tiation must be. approved by our Commissioner and the public must be notified of

such pending action through press releases and publication of a notice in the

Federal Register. Steps are being implemented to meet those requirements for

negotiation of a contract with Taos.
