o'~0~~
>)',

.

The Cherry Creek channel downstream from the Cherry Creek
Dam has been deteriorating over the years. Areas adjoining the
channel have become more intensively developed and runoff can
be expected to increase. Operation of the Cherry Creek project
could be curtailed. It is proposed that the Cherry Creek
channel be improved in the reach downstream from the dam.

The Sand Creek dam and reservoir is included in the plan
of improvement for flood control purposes. There would be no
permanent pool for recreation; however, facilities for general
land-based recreation would be developed in the area.

The Toll Gate Creek dam and reservoir is also included
in the plan of improvement for flood control purposes. There
would be no permanent pool for recreation, but the reservoir
would be developed for land-based recreation.

Approximately 570 acres of land adjoining the Sand Creek
channel between the proposed Sand Creek dam and reservoir and
the Adams-Arapahoe County line in Aurora would be acquired for
reservoir releases, for flood control, and for open-space
recreation development. The channel from the Adams-Arapahoe
County line downstream to the mouth of Sand Creek would be
improved to increase its capacity. This improvement would
increase the degree of flood protection in the Sand Creek basin.

In accordance with Federal law, local interests would be
required to participate in the construction of parts of the
overall plan for the Cherry Creek and Sand Creek basins. Local
interests would be required to participate in development of
the recreation functions at the projects and in fUrnishing a
portion of the land for the channel improvements.

The report recommends that the plan of improvement for
the South Platte River basin in Colorado, approved by the
Flood Control Act of 1950, be modified to include construction
of the authorized Castlewood Dam and Reservoir, at an estimated
f1rst cost to the Federal Government for construction of
$26,586,000; modification of the Cherry Creek Dam and Reservoir,
at an estimated first cost to the Federal Government of $296,000;
channel improvement of the Cherry Creek channel, at an estimated
first cost to the Federal Government of $9,416,000; construction
of the Sand Creek dam and reservoir, at an estimated first cost
to the Federal Government for construction of $23,817,000;
construction of the Toll Gate Creek dam and reservoir, at an

.

3
