From about 4' miles downstream from <br />the Cherry Creek Dsm to its mouth, Cherry Creek has been improved <br />by the city of Denver. from 4 miles to 9 miles downstream from. <br />the dam, the improvement consisted of ch.annel straightening, <br />enlargement, .and drop structures. From 9 tq 12 miles .downstresm . <br />from the d8lll, the improvement consisted of straightening and ' <br />enlarging with concrete retaining walls to form a section 88 <br />feet wide and varying from 10 to 15 feet deep. . <br /> <br />(4) Irrigation deVelopnent began about 1862 and was <br />concentrated in the valley between Franktown and Denver. There <br />are a number of small individual diversions from Cherry Creek <br />for irrigation. Most of the approximately 2,600 acres of irri- <br />gated land is supplied by about 50 irrigation wells.. <br /> <br />(5) Three municipal water Supply well fields are <br />located in the Cherry Creek valley. The Aurora well field is <br />situated upstre8lll from the Cherry Creek Reservoir. Denverhas <br />had collection galleries in the Cherry Creek valley since about <br />1887. These are located just upstresm from the city limits of <br />Glendale. The Denver Water Board has water rights for about 14 <br />cubic feet per second from these wells. Glendale also has <br />wells J.ocated along Cherry Creek wi thin its corporate J.imi ts . <br />These systems provide only a small part of the total water supply <br />needs of the Denver area. <br /> <br />13. PUBLIC MEETINGS AND HEARINGS <br /> <br />a. The Denver District of the Corps of Engineers conducted <br />a study of the flood problems at Aurora in response to a resolu- <br />tion by the Public Works Committee of the United States Senate, <br />adopted 4 March 1947. A public hearing was held in Aurora on <br />15 July 1947. Local interests expressed a desire for solutions <br />to the flood problem. The increase in J.and vllluewas ci.ted as . <br />potential additional 'Ilenefits for flood protection measures. ' <br />The pav ng of large areas of Lowry Air Force Base .andthe <br />increas d urban development reduced infiltration and caused <br />increas d runoff. Local interests generally agreed that inade- <br />quate b idge openings and culverts ponded fJ.oodflows and .reduced <br />the ell. city of the Westerly Creek channel. . Channel imprOvemE!nts <br />through the.
