An aerial view of development along
Sand Creek near the South Platte River. April 1969.

b. Cherry Creek basin. The earliest settlements in the
Denver area occurred in 1858 near the mouth of Cherry Creek. By
the 1930's, the lower 5 miles of the Cherry Creek valley lay in
an urbanized area. The increased growth of the Denver metropolitan
area since World War II has become a major factor of the basin's
economy. Urban expansion into the basin has progressed rapidly.
A wide spectrum of urban growth, including highly developed
recreational, residential, commercial, and industrial areas, is
found along Cherry Creek. Urban development has reached the
Cherry Creek project area. Scattered developments are beginning
to bypass the reservoir area and move farther into the basin.
Upstream from the dam, the area is about 80 percent agricultural.
Most crops produced are used for livestock feeding.

.

11
