Sand Creek basin. Prior to World War II, nearly all of
the Sand Creek basin was devoted to agriculture. A few industrial
buildings and oil refineries, situated near the mouth of Sand
Creek, had encroached on the flood plains. During the war, the
Denver metropolitan area began to expand into the basin. The
growth was influenced by the existing Fitzsimons General Hospital
and by the establishment of the Lowry Air Force Base, the Rocky
Mountain Arsenal, and Buckley Field. By the mid-1950's, Aurora
had expanded eastward to the vicinity of the hospital. In 1969,
the downstream 10 miles of the Sand Creek valley, the downstream
4 miles of the Toll Gate Creek valley, and adjacent uplands had
experienced substantial urban development. Current projections
indicate that the growth of the Denver metropolitan area will
continue at a rapid pace. Growth patterns point to continued
urban expansion eastward to Buckley Field and southward to the
Cherry Creek Dam. Damage potentials in the flood plains can be
expected to increase.

10

.
