Fi~re 1. An aerial view of Cherry Creek between
Lakewood Gulch and Franktown. April 1969.

c. From Cherry Creek Dam to Goldsmith Gulch, a distance of
about 4 miles, the channel is ~enerally in its natural state.
From the dam to Havana Street, the channel was improved durinp-
the construction of the Cherry Creek Dam and Reservoir. From
Havana Street to Goldsmith Gulch, the channel is sinuous and
ran~es from 50 to 150 feet wide and from 2 to 10 feet deep.
Channel capacity in this reach avera~es 4,000 cubic feet per
second. Loss of floodway capacity has resulted from indis-
criminate filling of overbank and channel areas by landowners.
In addition, channel materials can be eroded by sustained
releases from the Cherry Creek Reservoir. ~o drop structures
have been constructed in this reach to control channel erosion.

d. Between Goldsmith Gulch and Speer Boulevard, a distance
of about 5 miles, the Cherry Creek channel has been improved by
local interests. The channel is about 80 feet wide and 10 feet
deep in this reach and has an average slope of 25 feet per mile.
Its capacity is about 14,000 cubic feet per second. The channel
