Stream slopes are rather
steep throughout the basin. Stream gradients on Sand Creek range
from 25 feet per mile upstream from Buckley Field to about 27
feet per mile downstream from Buckley Field. East Toll Gate and
West Toll Gate Creeks slope about 50 feet per mile from their
headwaters to their junction. Downstream from the junction, Toll
Gate Creek has a slope of about 20 feet per mile. Through the
metropolitan area, Sand Creek is generally characterized by a
broad flat-bottomed sandy channel with low steep banks. Grass,
brush, and trees occupy portions of the immediate overflow area.
The Sand Creek channel width from Buckley Field to its mouth
ranges from 30 to 250 feet. The Toll Gate Creek channel ranges
from about 15 feet wide at its source to 150 feet wide at its
mouth.

b. Cherry Creek basin. Cherry Creek is formed by the con-
fluence of East Cherry and West Cherry Creeks. Valley widths
along the two creeks average about one-fourth mile. Stream
gradients on these tributaries range from 35 to 60 feet per mile.
From the confluence of East Cherry and West Cherry Creeks to
Lake Gulch, Cherry Creek has an average stream gradient of
100 feet per mile. From Lake Gulch to a point 2 miles south
of Franktown, Cherry Creek passes through a narrow steep-walled
canyon, dropping 400 feet in about 5 miles. In the vicinity of
Franktown, Cherry Creek enters a broad flat-bottome( valley about
three-fourths of a mile wide. From Franktown to the Cherry Creek
Reservoir, the Cherry Creek channel averages 200 feet wide and
ranges from 2 to 10 feet deep. The bed has an average slope of
25 feet per mile. The channel is alluvial, flat-bottomed, and
follows a meandering course.
