Other reports. The Bureau Of Reclamation, the .soil <br />Conservation Service, and State and local interests have prepared <br />many reports dealing with selected problems within the st~dy area. <br />These reports, or portions thereof, where applicable, are dis- <br />cussed in this report. <br /> <br />4. BASIN DESCRIPTIONS <br /> <br />a. Sand Creek basin. Sand Creek is a right-bank plains <br />tributary of the South Platte River. . The Sand Creek basinliss <br />in north-central Colorado, to the east and southeast of the city <br />of Denver. The basin is long and narrow, with a length of 32 <br />miles and an average width of 6 miles. Portions of Elbert, <br />Douglas, Arapahoe. Denver, and Adams Counties are included in <br />the 189-square-mile drainage area. The basin is bounded by the <br />Cherry Creek basin on the west and by Boxelder and First Creek <br />basins on the east. Sand Creek headwaters originate on the <br />Douglas-Elbert County line, about 6 miles northeast of F'ranktown. <br />The stream flows north and west for 38 miles to its confluence <br />with the South Platte River. In the Denver metropolitan area, <br />Sand Creek flows along the edge of Buckley Air National Guard <br />Base, hereinafter referred to as Buckley Field, and through the <br />northern environs of Aurora. The creek joins the South Platte <br />River at Conunerce City just north of the Denver city limits. . <br />Coal Creek, which drains 95 square mile's, joins Murphy Creek, <br />which drains 13 sqllare miles, to fom Sand Creek. The principal <br />tributary of Sand Creek is Toll Gate Creek, which drains 39 <br />square miles of the west-central Sand Creek basin. Toll: Gate <br />Creek basin has a length of 12 miles and an average width of <br />3 miles. Ea.st and West Toll Gate Creeks flow northwest~ard and <br />join between Aurora and Buckley Field to form Toll Gate Creek, <br />which continues 4 miles northwestward to join Sand Cree.k. Minor <br />tributaries of Sand Creek include Westerly and Senac Creeks. <br />Kelly Road Detention Dam is located on Westerly Creek.
