Shallow, 0 to <br /> <br />20 inches to fractured shale. <br /> <br />It is noncalcareous and <br /> <br />mildly alkaline at the surface and becomes moderately <br /> <br />alkaline with depth. <br /> <br />Above the fract~red shale tex- <br /> <br />ture is loam or light clay loam, <br /> <br />In most places <br /> <br />water and tree roots penetrate deep into the fractured <br /> <br />shale. <br /> <br />If these areas are irrigated some seepage will <br /> <br />occur. <br /> <br />GfE Scholle Association, steep. This mapping unit <br /> <br />comprises deep moderately sandy soils intermixed with <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />gravelly and cobbly sandy loarns. They are noncalcareous <br /> <br />and neutral to about 15 inches. A zone of chalky lime <br /> <br />occurs between 20 and 40 inches. The surface layer <br /> <br />consists of pockets of loa:m, stony loam and gravelly <br /> <br />loam. <br /> <br />In small grassy parks on ridge tops and along <br /> <br />drainways small areas of Capulin loam are included. <br /> <br />Capulin soils have a clay loam subsoil and are moder- <br /> <br />ately deep and deep to gravelly and stony loam.
