The San Jacinto reservoir seepage system was im-
proved by the installation of a new pump of greater capacity and
the construction of a larger seepage sump and additional trenches
and the enlargement of existing trenches.
During October 1949, the Riverside County Road Department,
constructed a new highway across the San Diego aqueduct be-
tween Winchester and Temccula necessitating the construction of
a reinforced concrete incasement around the District pipe line.
The work was contracted by the county and was inspected by a
District representative. The construction by the City of Los Ange-
les of the extension of Western Avenue south of Torrance Boule-
vanl made necessary the incasement in concrete of 140 feet of the
Palos Verdes feeder and the lowering of one manhole by the city's
contractor. A District representative inspected these operations
as required from July to September 1949.
A high count of diatoms and protozoa in Lake Mathews water
samples early in February 1950 led to the treatment on February
21 and 22, of the entire reservoir area with copper sulfate at the
rate of 15 pounds to the acre, the first such complete treatment
since January 1948. A total of 30,000 pounds of the powdered ma-
terial was sprayed on the water surface from two District boats.
Water samples taken subsequently indicated that the treatment
was successful in destroying the organisms,

Additimwl sCI'vice outlets

Eleven additional ~ervice outlets for member agencies were com-
pleted-during tlie'fear, 'nilie lil" construction COli tract 'and two by
District forces. The San Marino lateral, a mile-long 16-inch di-
ameter pipe line built at District expense uuder contract with Wu-
cetich Construction, was completed on October 12, 1949 making
Colorado River water available to the City of San Marino at Sierra
Madre Boulevard south of Walnut Street in Pasadena. Connection
has not yet been made by the California Water and Telephone
Company which serves the major portion of the city. The West
Basin feeder, constructed for service to West Basin Municipal
Water District and completed on April 10. 1950, extends from the
Palos Verdes feeder in Avalon Boulevard westerly along Redondo
Beach Boulevard and Manhattan Beach Boulevard to terminal
delivery structures at Redondo Avenue, where service connections
