'" r. p <br />,jVt..l <br />30 <br /> <br />\1 E T R 0 P 0 LI TAN Ii' ATE R D [ S T R leT <br /> <br />the Los Angeles County Flood Control District. subject further to <br />a contract between the Metropolitan Water District and the United <br />States granting the Navy Department the use of the reservoir for <br />the purpose of research in underwater ordnance. <br />The terms of the Navy contract provide for payment to the Dis- <br />trict for use of the reservoir at the rate of $137.00 per day for such <br />time as the water level is maintained at elevation 1130 feet above <br />sea level and $342,00 per day for such time as the level is main- <br />tained at elevation 1152 feet above sea level. Pa)'ments from the <br />Navy for the past fiscal year amounted to 365 days at the $137 <br />rate, or a total of $50,005.00. <br />The above-mentioned agreement of October 1, 1945 provides for <br />periodic redeterminations of the reservoir capacity, The last such <br />survey was made in 1938, Accordingly from November 1949 to <br />January 1950 the District surveyed the reservoir. obtaining details <br />of the silt deposit within the inundated areas by soundings and by <br />preparing topogl'llphic maps of areas above the water line, The <br />revised capacity of the reservoir was determined to be 35.171 acre. <br />feet, a loss since 1938 of 1,484 acre-feet. <br /> <br />Operation of the dis/rilill/;on -'ys/elll <br /> <br />An average crew of 38 men, exclusive of the softening anei filtra- <br />tion plant forces, working under the direction of the assistant <br />general manager and chief engineer, has carried on all operation, <br />maintenance. and minor construction activities on the distribution <br />system, Foremen with small crews were located at Lake Mathews. <br />l\1orris reservoir, Orange County reservoir, Pales Verdes reservoir. <br />San Jacinto reservoir, and at the north portal of Hollywood tunnel. <br />The foremen and their crews maintain the reservoirs. the upper <br />feeder, the branch feeders, the latera],; to constituent areas and the <br />District portion of the San Diego aqueduct, Normal maintenance <br />activities include systematic patrol of the pipe lines and structures, <br />operation of valves, meters, and equipment, minor repairs, painting <br />of metalwork. daily observation of water delh'eries. changing of <br />meter charts, collection of water samples at regular intervals, and <br />contacts with operating forces of the member agencies with regard <br />to their water requil'ements. Special and major maintenance, repair <br />and construction work is done by a crew of men under the master <br />mechanic with headquarters at the District shops at La Verne, <br />
