<br />) <br /> <br />\ <br /> <br />i <br />" <br /> <br />~~~:; <br /> <br />OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE <br /> <br />29 <br /> <br />In addition to the upper feeder and its branches. the distribution <br />system includes the San Diego aqueduct, supplying untreated water <br />to the San Diego County Water Authority, which agency was an- <br />nexed to the Metropolitan Water District in December 1946. Con- <br />struction of the 71.1-mile San Diego aqueduct by the U, S, Navy <br />from the west portal of San Jacinto tunnel to San Vicente reservoir <br />of the San Diego city water system was completed in November <br />1947, As one of the terms of annexation, the District agreed to <br />assume payment of one half the cost of the San Diego aqueduct <br />over a period of 30 years. In return for its payment and upon com- <br />pletion of the several contracts with the United States and the San <br />Diego County Water Authority covering disposition of the aque- <br />duct and related matters, the District will be vested with ownership <br />of the northerly half of the aqueduct. By the terms of the annexa- <br />tion, the District has also assumed the obligation to increase the <br />capacity of this section when enlargement is required, The division <br />point of ownership will be 50 feet southerly of the north end of the <br />San Luis Rey steel siphon. The northerly half of the aqueduct i.< <br />operated and maintained by the District. This portion includes 34,8 <br />miles of precast concrete pipe line varying from 48 to 96 inches in <br />diameter, a 6-foot tunnel 0.9 mile in length, and the San Jacinto <br />regulating reservoir, with a usable capacity of 1400 acre-fcct. <br />The quantity of water delivered to the San Diego County Water <br />Authority is measured by means of a venturi tube and flow meter <br />at the outlet of the San Jacinto reservoir. Actual delivery of water <br />is made on the north side of the San Luis Rey River into the south- <br />erly portion of the aqueduct for which the Authority is responsible, <br />and at the Fallbrook-Oceanside turnout located 1.9 miles south of <br />the Riverside-San Diego county line, <br />In addition to Lake Mathews. Orange County. Corona del Mar, <br />Palos Verdes and San Jacinto reservoirs, the District acquired from <br />the City of Pasadena by agreement made in 1932 and consummated <br />in 1941, Morris reservoir in Pine Canyon on the San Gabriel River. <br />This reservoir provides emergency storage above the upper feeder <br />to which it is connected through Monrovia tunnel No, 2 and a steel <br />pipe line under the river bed immediately below Morris Dam. <br /> <br />Operation of Morris ,'eservoi,. <br /> <br />Morris reservoir was operated during the year in accordance with <br />the contract entered into October 1, 1945 between the Metropolitan <br />Water District, the San Gabriel Valley Protective Association. and <br />
