The sediment investigations program in the Arkansas River <br /> <br />subbasin in Colorado was originally planned as a comprehensive program to <br /> <br />supply sediment data for future project planning and especially for use in <br /> <br />the planning of the operation and management of John Martin Dam and Res- <br /> <br />ervoir. Previous reports have included analyses of the various aspects and <br /> <br />factors influencing sedimentation with trends and conclusions considered <br /> <br />pertinent. To avoid repetition of data previously presented, only recent <br /> <br />data are presented with reference to previous reports for the earlier data <br /> <br />as necessary. This report includes information obtained from the data <br /> <br />collection program and presents trends and conclusions based on all of <br /> <br />the resurveys. <br /> <br />ARKANSAS RIVER SUBBASIN ABOVE GREAT BEND, KANSAS <br /> <br />6. Drainage area. The total drainage area of the Arkansas River sub- <br /> <br />basin above Great Bend, Kansas is 34,356 square miles of which 28,354 square <br /> <br />miles are. contributing. The length of the main stem of the Arkansas River <br /> <br /> <br />above Great Bend, Kansas, is about 586 miles. Above John Martin Dam, the <br /> <br />l <br /> <br />drainage area is 18,915 square miles, of which 18,130 square miles contribute <br /> <br />to runoff and 17,080 square miles contribute to sedimentation in the reservoir. <br /> <br />The length of the main stem above the dam is about 300 miles. About 30 percent <br /> <br />of the area above John Martin Dam is mountainous with some peaks over 14,000 <br /> <br />feet above m.s.l. The other 70 percent is plains generally between 6,000 and <br /> <br />3,800 feet above m.s.!. Plate 1 shows the drainage area of the Arkansas River <br /> <br />above Great Bend, Kansas. <br /> <br />7. Sediment sources. Most of the sediment transported by the Arkansas <br /> <br />River is derived from the areas below Pueblo, Colorado.
